This weekend, the District 8-6A tournament was held in Allen, and it seemed the other teams came to compete for second. There was no coming back for the rest of District 8-6A after the semi-finals when the Eagles put 13 out of 14 weight classes in the finals. The Eagles finished with 12 District champions: 106 lb. sophomore Gabe Martinez, 120 lb. senior Alonzo Herrera, 126 lb. junior Logan Brown, 138 lb. sophomore Trent Dooley, 145 lb. senior Hunter Gibson, 152 lb. junior Juwan Robinson, 160 lb. freshman A.J. Ferrari, 170 lb. junior Braeden Redlin, 180 lb. senior Evan Hackett, 195 lb senior Mark Inglehart, 220 lb. senior Justin Veagas, and Heavyweight senior Nico Manzonelli. Also qualifying for the regional tournament was sophomore Noah Yeamans, who placed second at 113 lbs. and sophomore Cody Mirander, who placed third at 132 lbs.
Coach Best told the team, “the most important thing is everyone advanced to regionals.”
The final team score was 326 points for Allen, and second was Plano West with 159.0. Plano dropped out of second place due to a team point deduction due to misconduct.
The Lady Eagles advanced two wrestlers for the Regional Tournament: 138 lb. junior Alex Lilies and 165 lb. Daisy Vazquez. Lilies continues her undefeated streak, clinching her 3rd district title and advancing to the regional tournament. Daisy Vazquez placed second. The Lady Eagles placed 3rd as a team.
Allen Junior Varsity followed the path of the Varsity, winning the District 8-6A title by a convincing margin. JV District champions were 106 lb. freshman Colby Sanford, 132 lb. sophomore Jesse Welling, 160 lb. freshman Alejandro Cavazos, 170 lb. junior Cole Reed, 195 lb. sophomore Jack Dougherty, and 220 lb. junior Willis Williams. The final team score for the JV teams are as follows: Allen first with 251, Wylie second with 189, and Plano 3rd with 166 team points.
Allen Varsity Boys and Girls will wrestle for the Region II 6A championship in Allen at the high school this Friday, February 17, 2017 and Saturday, February 18, 2017. The first session begins at 9:00 a.m. Friday, February 17th with the semi-finals starting at 7:00 pm. Wrestling starts Saturday, February 18th at 11:30 a.m. and championship finals start at 4:00 pm.
Price for entry into the tournament is the day rates of seven dollars per student and twelve dollars for adults. Fans can save some money by purchasing tournament passes at the student rate of twelve dollars and adult rate of twenty dollars.
Everyone come out and support the Eagles as they compete for their 8th consecutive team championship.
