Allen Eagles Crown First Wrestling State Champion - Take
Fifth as a Team!
February 24,
2007: The Allen Grapplers took eight qualifiers to Austin over the weekend and brought back 3 medals. Erik Simons led the
team with a dominating finals performance over Roderick Gaines (Rockwall) with a 15 to 4 major decision for the 103 pound
championship. Kamerawn Smedley took home a silver in the 140 pound weight class, and Scotty Cayton took home a bronze medal
in the 180 pound weight class.
Performances from all the state qualifiers gave Allen the points needed for a fifth
place finish in the team standings. Results from the other qualifiers were: Kiara Swain went 2-2 at 185 in the girls tournament,
while in the boys tournament, Steven Carathers went 0-2 at 112, Eden Bernstein went 2-2 at 135, Esteban Carrera went 0-2 at
152, Cody Graulich went 1-2 at 171.
Many thanks go out to all the parents, former Allen wrestlers, friends and families
that made the trip to Austin. The Allen fans were a significant presence, and Allen should be proud of the showing of support
seen at the Delco Center this weekend
February 10, 2007: Allen Eagles Win Region III Championship
Led by regional champions, Erik Simons (103) and Eden Bernstein (135), the Eagles held off second
place Cinco Ranch 164 to 155 to claim the team championship. Allen saw outstanding performance from state qualifiers Esteban
Carrera (152 - 2nd place), Kamerawn Smedley (140 - 3rd place), Scotty Cayton (180 - 3rd place), and Cody Graulich (171 - 4th
place). Additionally, Allen grapplers Steven Carathers (112 - 5th place), Zach Withers (189 - 5th place) and Andrew Haynie
(HWT - 6th place) are state alternates and regional placers. In the girls' tournament, Kiara Swain becomes the first Allen
girls two-time state qualifier by taking third place at 185. Overall, the Allen Eagles showed great teamwork in pulling out the championship and putting the team
in solid standing for the state tournament. Allen has reason to be proud of these athletes! We're looking forward to more great wrestling action at the state tournament
in Austin on February 23 & 24. Don't forget that we will be hosting the Collin County JV tournament next weekend (February
17) - where our JV team will get some critical mat time - it will also be an opportunity to get a glimpse of next year's varsity
candidates.
Allen Wrestling Team Captures
17-5A Dstrict Championship
The Allen wrestling team captured
its’ 4th District 17-5A Championship title in 5 years. Of the fifteen weight
divisions, Allen grapplers dominated the competition -securing first place in seven weight divisions as well as five
runner-up finishes.
The
team won the title by an impressive margin of 104 points. Notable mention, at
152 lbs, Esteban Carrera was awarded The Most Outstanding Wrestler (MOW) of the Tournament.
